MTN XtraByte: Help in Time of Data Shortage

Everyone knows how to borrow airtime but most people don’t know how to borrow data. Some people don’t even know that it is possible to borrow data. If you are on MTN, you can borrow data anytime you want with MTN XtraByte.

MTN XtraByte Eligibility Requirements

Certain eligibility requirements apply to MTN XtraByte. It is advisable to read through the eligibility requirements to know what applies to you.

  • Firstly, the service is available only to MTN prepaid customers. In other words, post-paid customers may not be able to access it.
  • To access XtraByte on MTN, you must have a registered MTN number.
  • You are ineligible for XtraByte if you purchased your MTN number in less than 3 months. You must be on the network for more than 3 months to access the service.
  • Also, you will not be able to borrow data with MTN XtraByte if you have more than N75 in your main account. You must have between N0 and N75.
  • In addition, if you have borrowed data with XtraByte in the past, you are required to pay your outstanding loans before accessing another one.
  • Lastly, you are required to have spent a minimum of N200 per month for the past three months to access the service.

How to Borrow Data On MTN XtraByte

There are basically two ways of borrowing data with MTN XtraByte. You can borrow data through the *606# menu or through 606 IVR. We will describe the steps for each of these two methods below.

Borrowing Data Through *606# Menu

Follow these steps to borrow data through the *606# menu.

  • Dial *606# on your MTN line and choose XtraByte from the menu.
  • Select your preferred data plan from the list of data bundles displayed by the system.
  • The system will send you a message containing the data amount plus the service fees. Confirm the transaction to proceed.
  • After confirming the transaction, you will receive the borrowed data in your XtraByte account. 
  • Finally, your main account will also be debited with the bundle amount plus the service fee and you will receive a success notification message.

Borrowing Data Through 606 IVR

Here are the steps to follow to borrow data through 606 IVR

  • Call 606 on your MTN line.
  • The system will prompt you to choose your preferred language which could either be English, Igbo, Hausa, or Yoruba.
  • If you do not meet the eligibility requirement, the system will notify you and then terminate the call.
  • If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will be asked to select either XtraByte or XtraTime.
  • On selecting XtraByte, the system will list out the data plans available for borrowing.
  • Select your preferred data plan.
  • On selecting a data plan, you will receive a message containing the preferred amount plus the applicable service fee. Confirm the transaction to proceed.
  • After confirming the transaction, you will receive the borrowed data in your XtraByte account. 
  • Finally, your main account will also be debited with the bundle amount plus the service fee and you will receive a success notification message.
